When we started a nanny share with another family, we didn't realize how many benefits there'd be. The nanny share built my son's resilience and communication, and luckily, we had an experienced nanny who brought patience and problem-solving to the table. Even though they were young, the boys would request more and more playdates together outside the nanny share days. AdvertisementThe two families have become very close since starting a nanny share. The best nanny share event yet!

In a top-floor atrium in downtown San Francisco on Thursday evening, tech workers from Google, Slack, X and Mozilla mingled next to a pair of cardboard cutouts of Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya. Alex Stamos, the former head of security at Facebook, was also spotted. “Do you think they’ll let me take home one of the freaky sandworm popcorn buckets?” someone in the crowd tittered. The techies were all there to celebrate Silicon Valley’s newest obsession: “Dune: Part 2,” the latest movie adapted from the Frank Herbert-authored science-fiction saga, which helped inspire many of them to become interested in technology. The film, which follows the 2021 installment “Dune,” sold an estimated $81.5 million in tickets in the United States and Canada over the weekend, the biggest opening for a Hollywood film since “Barbie.”

Thousands of student-loan borrowers are still waiting for relief under the Sweet v. Cardona settlement. The Justice Department said the delays could be a result of complex loan histories that take time for servicers to process. President Joe Biden's Justice Department has some reasons why the process has been so delayed. "Receiving settlement relief in a timely and predictable manner is a matter of urgency for Class Members," the letter said. It also said in a recent report that it "will continue to work on improving that process and on verifying the status of Class Members' relief."

GOP Rep. Virginia Foxx issued a subpoena to the Education Department on Tuesday. AdvertisementAdvertisementA top Republican lawmaker is turning to legal action to get answers from the Education Department on student-debt relief. Borrower defense claims are forms a borrower can submit if they believe they were defrauded by the school they attended, and if approved, their loans from that school would be discharged. AdvertisementAdvertisement"This is the first time the Committee has subpoenaed the Education Department, and it is a measure that I do not take lightly. Biden's Education Department has consistently stood by its legal authority to approve borrower defense claims for defrauded borrowers.

AdvertisementAdvertisementStudent-loan payments have resumed, but not all federal borrowers should be making payments. However, it's in some borrowers' best interests to not make payments — even if their servicer has given them a billing statement. While borrowers can submit those claims individually, the Education Department has also announced relief for groups of defrauded borrowers without them needing to take any action themselves. AdvertisementAdvertisementIf borrowers received notice of relief but are still in repayment status, they can contact their servicer, or Federal Student Aid's ombudsman. However, interest will still accrue during that time, and the Education Department cannot control how credit scoring companies interpret the missed payments.

Student-loan borrowers who were part of a 2022 settlement are still waiting for their relief to be processed. A legal advocacy group said a student-loan company is not carrying out the settlement terms correctly. It said some borrowers within the settlement were told they have to resume payments in October. The group said that forcing borrowers with pending borrower defense claims back into repayment "violates the court-approved Settlement Agreement and applicable regulations." The federal pause on student-loan payment ended on September 1 when interest began accruing again on borrowers' balances.

New York CNN —US oil prices climbed above $90 a barrel on Thursday for the first time in 10 months, threatening to push gasoline prices even higher and heat up inflation across the economy. High oil prices have already created an unusual situation where gasoline is getting more expensive even after the summer driving season has ended. The latest oil market rally has been driven by concerns about supply. The recent jump in energy prices is undoing some of the progress made by central banks in the fight against inflation. A pair of inflation reports released this week showed prices rose by more than expected in August, in large part because of rising gas prices.

In 2022, there were only about 1.4 million visitors, according to data provided by the government, still considerably below pre-pandemic levels. That’s why events like the Women’s World Cup are so important. Cities like Wellington and Auckland have catered to World Cup tourists by making public transportation free on game days for anyone with a match ticket. The extra effort has not gone unnoticed by tourists, especially those who have traveled to other World Cup events. Compared to the last Women’s World Cup in France, more businesses seem excited to welcome tourists, said US fan Carly Andler.

In 2019, a space upstairs from the main bar opened as Sala Spiritello. The most popular drink there is the Compadre, made with mezcal, chinotto liqueur, agave syrup, sweet vermouth, bitters and the inevitable Campari. And soon there will be a third smaller, invitation-only space in the basement called Sala Gaspare, named after the company founder, Gaspare Campari. Architectural monuments stand next to newer construction; timeless sartorial style meets current fashion on the street each day. The aperitivo will always be king in Milan.

The Supreme Court rejected an appeal to halt debt relief for borrowers who say they were defrauded. The Higher Education Act has been floated as another way for Biden to pursue his debt-relief plan. The Supreme Court is already considering whether Biden's plan to cancel up to $20,000 in student debt for federal borrowers is legal. Activists and students protest in front of the Supreme Court during a rally for student-debt cancellation in Washington, DC, on February 28. Still, along with the lawsuits against broad debt relief, the payment pause is also being challenged — leaving millions of borrowers in financial limbo.
The Supreme Court ruled that $6 billion in student-debt relief for 200,000 borrowers can move forward. Three schools named in the settlement had asked the Supreme Court to pause the relief. The lawsuit was first filed in 2019 under former President Donald Trump on behalf of borrowers with stalled borrower defense claims, or claims borrowers can file if they believe they were defrauded by the school they attended. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the request, and now, the Supreme Court came to the same conclusion. "The application for stay presented to Justice Kagan and by her referred to the Court is denied," the Supreme Court wrote in its very brief decision.
The Education Department pushed back on a lawsuit to halt student-debt relief for borrowers who said they were defrauded. A federal judge signed off on a settlement that would give those borrowers $6 billion in debt relief. The Education Department agreed to the settlement last summer, and in November, a federal judge signed off on $6 billion in debt relief for 200,000 borrowers. On Wednesday, the Education Department responded to the schools' appeal, and as expected, it told the Supreme Court that staying the relief will cause "obvious harm" for impacted borrowers and the department itself. The Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a case aiming to block that broader relief in February.
A federal judge ruled that 200,000 borrowers can move forward with relief in a borrower defense settlement. Last month, three schools mentioned in the settlement appealed the decision to the Supreme Court. 20 GOP-led states filed an amicus brief supporting the schools, arguing Biden doesn't have authority to carry out this relief. Unlawful delay of debt relief results in clear monetary harm." The Education Department has until Wednesday to file a response to the three schools' lawsuit, which currently sits with Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan.
An appeals court rejected three companies' request to pause relief for borrowers in the Sweet vs. Cardona lawsuit. Last year, a federal judge signed off on a settlement in the case that would give 200,000 borrowers $6 billion in debt relief. Those borrowers filed a lawsuit in 2019 over stalled borrower defense claims against the schools they attended. Cardona agreed to a settlement last summer in the case that would give 200,000 impacted borrowers $6 billion in debt relief. Borrowers who filed a claim against a school not included on that list will receive relief based on the following timeline:
A federal judge ruled that $6 billion in student-debt relief for 200,000 borrowers can move forward. Since the lawsuit wasn't resolved under Trump, President Joe Biden took it on and agreed to a settlement to give borrowers relief. And it gives plaintiffs, who have languished in borrower-defense application limbo, their long-awaited relief," Alsup wrote in his decision. "They have already waited years for the resolution of their borrower defense ('BD') applications, some of which have been pending since 2015," the filing said. Along with automatic relief for 200,000 borrowers, the settlement also allows for a streamlined review of another 64,000 borrower defense applications.

A federal judge signed off on a settlement giving 200,000 student-loan borrowers $6 billion in debt relief last year. In January, three companies requested a stay on the relief, citing reputational harm the settlement brought them. Borrowers in the case recently filed a motion opposing the stay due to the harm postponing the relief would bring. Some of the borrowers who were set to see debt forgiveness attended colleges run by those companies, which were among many named in the November settlement. One hundred and forty-four borrowers have submitted declarations attesting to the harm a stay would cause them."
A judge signed off on a settlement last year giving 200,000 defrauded borrowers $6 billion in student-debt relief. A group of companies last week filed an appeals notice to stop the relief from going through. They argued their reputations will be harmed, and they were not given "due process" after being included in the settlement. In November, federal Judge William Alsup granted final approval of a lawsuit — Sweet v. Cardona — that would give over $6 billion in student-debt relief to 200,000 borrowers who were defrauded by a school they attended. Prior to his final ruling, Alsup gave schools the chance to intervene, but he ultimately rejected their arguments.
